Why This Nearby Escape Keeps Surprising Us
One of our favorite weekend escapes from Denver is just an hour and a half south. Colorado Springs. Whether we’re looking for a scenic hike, a cozy coffee shop, or a surprising local gem, this city always delivers. It is one of those places that feels familiar but still manages to wow us every time.
Here are some of the best things to do in and around Colorado Springs, all personally experienced and loved by us.

1. Manitou Springs
If you like eclectic towns with local character, you will love Manitou Springs. You can walk through art galleries, try water from the natural springs, browse small shops, and snack your way through town. It has a fun and laid back energy that is perfect for wandering.
There is also a free shuttle that makes it easy to explore without worrying about parking.

2. Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The Cog Railway is one of the most unique ways to see the Colorado mountains. The ride to the summit of Pikes Peak is full of breathtaking views and fun facts about the region. Once at the top, you get panoramic views and a taste of the famous high altitude donuts.
This is a great activity if you want to see the mountains without having to hike them.

3. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
One of the highest elevation zoos in the world and one of the coolest. The layout winds up the mountain with incredible views and interactive exhibits. You can feed the giraffes, ride the lift, and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
We especially love that it feels like a mix of adventure and wildlife education.

4. Garden of the Gods
An absolute must see. The red rock formations are iconic and stunning at any time of day, but sunrise or golden hour makes it extra magical. It is free to visit and great for walking, hiking, or simply driving through if you’re short on time.
We love starting the day here with coffee in hand and letting the views set the tone.

5. The Manitou Incline
If you are up for a challenge, the Incline is an iconic stair-step hike that climbs nearly 2000 feet in less than a mile. It is steep, intense, and totally worth it for the views at the top.
You will definitely feel your legs burn but finishing it feels like a true accomplishment. Go early in the morning and bring plenty of water.
Final Thoughts
Colorado Springs is more than just a day trip. It is a destination full of nature, charm, and hidden gems. Whether you are coming for the views, the food, or the adventure, it is a place that keeps calling us back.
